Listed below are the goals for each unit of first grade math. Becker uses the Everyday Mathematics series. After the goal is listed the level at which the child is expected to perform for that unit. To review with your child, check the Kindergarten goals.


General Expectations:
Beginning: Children cannot complete the task independently. They show little understanding of the concept or skill

Developing: Children show some understanding. However, errors or misunderstandings still occur. Reminders, hints, and suggestions are incorporated with understanding.

Secure: Children can apply the skill or concept correctly and independently.

Unit 1
Count by 5s to 40 – Developing
Count by 2s to 40 – Developing
Write numbers from 1 to 20. – Developing
Compare pairs of numbers less than 18 – Developing
Write and count tallies – Developing
Count up and back by 1s starting with any number up to and including 20 – Secure
Count up to 20 objects – Secure

Unit 2
Calculate the values of various combinations of pennies and nickels– Developing
Find complements of 10– Developing
Solve simple addition and subtraction number stories– Developing
Count up and back by 1s on the number grid– Developing/Secure
Tell time to the nearest hour– Developing/Secure
Count by 2s to 20– Secure
Count by 5s to 50– Secure

Unit 3
Complete Frames-and-Arrows diagrams – Beginning/Developing
Identify and complete patterns– Developing
Solve simple addition and subtraction problems by skip counting on the number line and the number grid – Developing
Know the values of P, N, D & calculate the values of combinations of these coins– Developing
Tell time to the nearest half-hour– Developing
Solve simple number stories– Developing

Unit 4
Use standard units for measuring length– Beginning/Developing
Find simple sums and missing addends– Developing
Calculate the values of coin combinations– Developing
Solve simple number stories– Developing
Order and compare numbers to 22– Developing/Secure
Tell time to the nearest half-hour– Developing/Secure

Unit 5
Find missing numbers and/or the missing rule in “What’s My Rule?” problems – Beginning
Understand place value for longs and cubes– Developing
Compare numbers using < and > – Developing
Know +1, +0, doubles and sums of 10 addition facts – Developing
Solve simple number stories– Developing

Unit 6
Measure objects to the nearest centimeter – Beginning
Understand digital notation for time– Beginning

Calculate the value of coin combinations: P, N, D, Q– Beginning/Developing
Find many names for a number– Developing

Unit 7
Identify 3-dimensional shapes and know their characteristics– Beginning
Identify symmetrical figures– Beginning
Sort and identify objects by attributes– Beginning/Developing
Identify polygons and know their characteristics– Beginning/Developing
Know addition facts– Developing

Unit 8
Make change for amounts less than $1– Beginning
Identify fractional parts – Beginning/Developing
Count set of quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies– Developing
Solve number problems– Developing
Understand place value for 10s and 1s– Developing/Secure

Unit 9
Solve 2-digit addition and subtraction problems – Beginning

Unit 10
This is a review of what was taught throughout the year.
