Sample Benchmark Assessment Reading Selection

Sam went to the park one day. He played on the swing and on the slide. Then he saw his friends playing baseball. He asked if he could play.
His friends let him bat the ball. He missed the first pitch. But he hit the next ball and it went over the fence. Sam made a home run!
When they were done playing the children went to Sam’s house for a snack. Sam’s grandma had just made cookies. Yum! They smelled good! The children had cookies and milk.
Then they wanted to draw some pictures and write a book. Sam got some paper, crayons and pencils. They had fun drawing pictures of their baseball game. Sam drew a picture of his home run. They each wrote the words for their pictures. Sam made a cover for the book with all of their names and the title. He called the book The Baseball Game. When they were done they stapled the pages together to make a book.
The children read their book to Sam’s grandma. She loved the story and the pictures. She told the children that they could read their story to Sam’s little sister. Little Kate giggled when she heard the story.
The children told Sam and his grandma thanks for the snack and the fun time making a book. Sam said thanks for letting him play baseball. Maybe tomorrow they could ride bikes and write a new story.
